But for a group of 15-year-old Canberra girls, these alternative/indie icons are the ultimate inspiration.

Say hello to Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers (TJJT), an alternative rock band uniting five students from the Orana Steiner school in Weston. The girls came together in July 2015, with a shared love of all things indie/alternative, including groups like Nirvana and Australia's Ball Park Music.

The band is fronted by lead vocalist Anna Ryan, with Scarlett McKahey on lead guitar, Neve van Boxsel on drums, Pip Gazard on keyboard and Jaida Stephenson on bass guitar.

TJJT are gaining popularity nationally through Triple J's Unearthed competition and so far their brand new song Crime Scene has had 2000 plays and 250 downloads via the competition website.

The music video for Crime Scene officially launches at Tuggeranong Arts Centre on Wednesday night and, according to lead guitarist and songwriter Scarlett McKahey, makes a strong statement about issues surrounding domestic violence, particularly as it effects teenagers in the home.

"Our music comes first, of course, but if we can raise awareness for issues such as domestic violence through our music, thatʼs a bonus for us," Scarlett said.

"We want to help with these major issues in whatever way we can.

"Our aim is to spice up Canberra with some 90s style alternative/grunge rock, funky beats, and some snazzy tunes."

The Crime Scene music video stars a cast of Canberra teenagers and tackles domestic violence and homelessness. It was directed by Canberra cinematographer Graham Gall, who describes TJJT as "brilliant role models for their peers".

The band will play an all ages gig on Thursday 17 November 2016 at the Front Gallery and Cafe, Lyneham. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets at the door.
