Year ten students Chelsea Bonanno, 16, and Maria Tsiokantas, 15, put in an application for the reality TV series back in April, and were invited to audition in Sydney at the beginning of May.

They wowed the producers and made it through to another round of auditions the same day, but then had an agonising six-week wait to hear anything.

"It was last week they called us and said, 'congratulations you're through to the live auditions' and we were so excited," said Bonanno.

The bubbly duo met at school when they were in grade three, and went on to do acting together and then worked with the same vocal teacher.

"The thing about Chelsea and I is our voices complement each other's. So through our lessons with our vocal teacher it was just a mutual decision that we made to sing together," said Tsiokantas.

The live auditions are filmed for the show and it will be the first time the duo have to sing in front of the show's three judges – Iggy Azalea, Guy Sebastian and Adam Lambert.

For their initial audition, the teens sang an a cappella version of Flashlight by Jessie J, but they're tight-lipped about their selection for the live audition, which is on in Sydney next Wednesday.

"With this song, we really made it our own and this is what we do when we sing together – we take songs and we just transform them. So we're really excited to bring our style to the stage and meet all the judges," said Bonanno.

And we could see more than just the ladies on screen when the show airs later this year. As part of the audition process, they've been gathering video footage from their everyday lives including with their friends and in class, and even managed to capture the whole Canberra Girls Grammar senior school shouting "X Factor" at assembly.

So could we be headed for the first ever Canberran X Factor winners?

"I think we've got a really, really good chance," said Bonanno.
