Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows the Gungahlin district has Canberra's highest birthrate at 1.94 per woman.

Mother of two Gigi Ang, currently five months pregnant, said the amenities and friendly atmosphere make it a great place to raise a family.

She and husband Russell bought a house in Franklin after previously living in the inner north, and say it is a great place to raise a family.

"It has lots of open spaces, parks and we've really loved it," Ms Ang said.

"Our street has a lot of young families and the neighbourhood kids like getting out and playing together."

Data released by the ABS showed the ACT recorded the lowest birth rate of any jurisdiction in 2016 at 1.55 babies per woman, the lowest rate since 2001, with Braddon the least common place for new babies

The territory accounted for 5152 of the 311,104 births registered in Australia in 2016, the lowest number of births since 2011.

Australia's total fertility rate was 1.79 babies per woman, while Tasmania recorded the highest birth rate at 1.95 babies per woman closely followed by the Northern Territory (1.92 babies per woman).

ACT recorded a significant drop of births in 2016, falling from 5542 in 2015 to 5152 in 2016, a drop of seven per cent.

NSW was the only other jurisdiction to record a drop in the number of births, with the ABS investigating if that drop is due to delays in registering births.

Victoria recorded the largest increase (9324 or 12.7 per cent) in the number of births registered in 2016

While the ACT's birthrate is dropping significantly there are a few suburbs where babies are still in abundance.

The inner north and inner south east in Canberra have the lowest fertility rates, while the north and north west have recorded higher fertility rates.

The southern regions show variability in fertility rates with only Waramanga in the higher range.

The outer north and north west of the territory had the highest birthrates, many suburbs above a birthrate of 2 per woman.

Warramanga can lay claim to being the most fertile suburb with a birthrate of 2.33, followed closely by Bonner and Crace, both with a birthrate of 2.32.

On a regional basis, Gungahlin has Canberra's highest birthrate at 1.94.

Meanwhile Braddon and Civic can claim to have the lowest birthrates at 0.67 and 0.79 respectively.

The ACT recorded the highest median ages of mothers and fathers (31.9 years and 33.8 years respectively), followed by Victoria (31.7 years for mothers and 33.7 years for fathers).

The Northern Territory had the youngest mothers (29.6 years), followed by Tasmania (30.0 years). This order was reversed for the father's median age, with 32.1 years for Tasmania and 32.4 years for the Northern Territory.

ANU demographer Dr Liz Allen said it was not surprising higher fertility was observed in the suburbs of Canberra.

"Families with children tend to opt for housing which meets the needs of growing children and is cost effective - housing with backyards and more bedrooms do not tend to be in built up areas around the city," she said.

"Also, employment and education factors also influence housing affordability and are associated with differential fertility rates."

Dr Allen said despite a slowing fertility rate, population momentum means Canberra will continue to see growth in the short to medium term.

"This is due to the population age structure - Canberra is in fact quite population-heavy around the peak ages at which people tend to have children," she said.

"What's important for Canberra is the differential rates of fertility across suburbs.

"We can see in the statistics that different suburbs across CAnberra require very different service and resource allocation.

"Striking a balance to ensure equity for all Canberrans is an ongoing challenge for government."

Dr Allen said the fact Canberra is largely an area with higher income compared to Australian averages meant the lower birth rate was not surprising.

"And family size is typically smaller among people with higher levels of education, and accordingly income," she said.

"This reflects wider social factors around gender and balancing work, life and family."
