Luckily the fleet is 90 mowers strong - but there is still plenty of work to be done by those on the job.

The dry weather has workers busy this week targeting priority areas including arterial roads and public parks.

Transport Canberra and City Services City Presentation director Stephen Alegria said the government was responsible for 5400 hectares of public land, including parks, sports grounds, road sides and urban spaces, with each area mown about every four weeks.

"As they finish an area they'll move to the next suburb and basically it's a bit like painting the Harbour Bridge - by the time they get to the end of the cycle, you're basically starting again at the beginning," he said.

"It's done by suburb but within that suburb they have the ability to prioritise one area over another if they need to, but generally speaking we try and do it as efficiently as we can."

The mowing not only keeps suburbs presentable and accessible but helps protect against bushfires.

Since the program started in late August last year the team has completed three mowing passes of arterial roads and four mowing passes of suburban areas - equivalent to about 14,200 hectares.

Mr Alegria said it could be a long day for those on the mower.

"Generally they work an eight-hour day, starting fairly early in the morning, and by the time they do their checks on the equipment they're probably on the mowers six hours a day," he said.

"I think for a lot of the guys and girls, it's quite a contemplative thing.

"In some areas it's quite tight, you know the laneways in between the blocks of houses, you've kind of got to concentrate and look out for the public and make sure there's no one on the bike path, so you need to be quite switched on.

"When they're doing the big areas it's probably more of, I can imagine, a farmer harvesting his paddocks, rolling up and down, quite contemplative."
