When only one victor remains, their fallen comrades get back up, only to do it all over again.

It's all in just another day's action for the members of Canberra Nerf Games.

Loaded up with a large arsenal of the popular toy, members meet up in different parks around Canberra to take part in different combat games and unleash their inner warrior.

Nerf player Orrin Shilton said the group was set up after a similar group run out of the Australian National University disbanded .

"ANU started it around 2009, which was called Canberra Dart Tag, and the group was formed out of that,"

"We normally play a range of games like team death matches, capture the flag or humans versus zombies and we basically just go from there."

Members gather together twice a month to put their Nerf skills to the test, and while Saturday's meeting at Weston Park in Yarralumla had 20 aficionados attend, Mr Shilton there were about 100 people as part of the group.

"We try to play whenever we can, it all depends of people's schedules though," he said.

"Numbers generally fluctuate throughout the year."

While Nerf guns are more commonly associated with children and teenagers, the group also attracts a wide range of age groups.

"Our oldest member is in his 50s, and we try to have as wide a range of ages as possible," Mr Shilton said.

"The youngest we've seen play is three when she first started out."

As well as the camaraderie between players, members said there were also other benefits to regular Nerf gun meetings.

Fellow player Stephen Dann said the matches also provided a large amount of physical exercise.

"The unofficial tag line of the ANU group was 'making nerds run since 2009', and a lot of [Nerf gun] players aren't usually sports orientated, so it gives them a reasons to run several kilometres," he said.

"But the best part about it is the people and also the many stories you get to tell afterwards."
