New levy for new apartment blocks
Icon Water has been trying to work out how to cover the cost its facing from urban redevelopment for a while now. At an estimated $80 million over the next 20 years, that's understandable.
It started with a complex proposal for special levies in some parts of Canberra, with different amounts for each one. Now, it's a bit more simple, but still pretty complex.
Ultimately, it means there's a $1200 a head levy coming for new infill developments, and that will add about $840,000 to the cost of a 350-unit development.
It could also mean those new costs will flow through the buyers, who are often first-home buyers when it comes to developments like those mainly affected.

Where are all our engineers from?

A new report shows Australia is failing to produce enough home-grown engineers and has an unbalanced workforce in the sector, carrying potential future risk.
The Engineers Australia state of the profession report shows that 70 per cent of new starters are born overseas, a situation it claims comes with serious and unnecessary risks.

Haig Park or Haig Art?
We're still waiting to know whether Haig Park could see a volleyball court, merry-go-round and even a haunted house.
But more concrete plans for the space involve music, installations, food, entertainment and pedal-powered karaoke. Haigiography is the creation of artists Distaffic Collective, and will be performed as part of Electric Shadows on April 7.
