Canberrans will vote in three lower house seats at the next federal election, with a territory-wide redistribution process to be put in motion on Friday.

The Australian Electoral Commission confirmed the new seat would be created on the back of nation-leading population growth figures released in June, coming as the House of Representatives grows by one seat to 151 members from the next poll.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr moved quickly to rule himself out of preselection consideration for Canberra's new federal seat on Thursday.

Within minutes of the Australian Electoral Commission's announcement of a third lower house seat for the ACT, Mr Barr said he would not be standing for Labor.

"I am enjoying my current role and there is much still to do. I won't be seeking pre-selection for the next federal election," Mr Barr told The Canberra Times.
