Canberra Now: Zed survives; and greyhounds help calm students

ACT Liberal senator Zed Seselja has emerged from the rubble of last week's federal government implosion with a more prestigious assistant ministry pitting him against local political rival and Canberra-based Labor MP Andrew Leigh.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has handed Senator Seselja the assistant ministry for treasury and finance as he extended the olive branch to backers of Peter Dutton's failed tilt at the leadership but left some on the backbench.

Senator Seselja played a crucial role in the conservative insurgency that split the Liberal party, detonated Mr Turnbull's leadership, but disastrously backfired by failing to elevate Mr Dutton to the Prime Minister's office after two spills.

The Reid Tennis Club celebrates its 90th birthday this year, a much-treasured oasis of green in the heart of Canberra.

As current president Terry Walker says, the club was right there at the beginning of Canberra.

"In 1928 there were probably 8000 people in Canberra. This is a time that's about 40 years before the lake; a year after the opening of Old Parliament House," he said.

The Morrison government has elevated the Coalition's decentralisation project in naming its first ministry, flagging the relocation of public service jobs to regional towns as core business.

A reshuffle of the government's senior MPs has also landed Senator Mathias Cormann with responsibility for the federal bureaucracy in a move that hands greater control of the public service to a defender of its growing spend on contractors.

Victorian Nationals MP Bridget McKenzie, a staunch advocate of relocating federal bureaucracy roles to the bush, has become minister for decentralisation as new Prime Minister Scott Morrison used his ministerial overhaul to signal his government's priorities.

A crowd of students took to the yard at Fenner Hall on Sunday for a playdate with retired greyhounds.

Student organiser David Harvey contacted Greyhound Connections a few months ago with the idea, and he was soon put in touch with Sami Bull, the group's vice-president and recent greyhound owner.

Ms Bull said greyhounds were the biggest "cuddlemonsters".

"They are so calm, and they will just take every little bit of attention that you give to them and they will lap it up and they will smile and they'll lean on you," she said.

ACT government minister Mick Gentleman has offered internet giant Google his support in helping to set up an office in Canberra, as a subsidiary of Google's holding company steps up drone delivery trials in the capital.

Mr Gentleman said he made the offer when he met Google co-founder Sergey Brin during a recent trip to California.

"I did offer him an opportunity to set up a base in the ACT for Google," Mr Gentleman said.

"We'd like to [take] any opportunity we can to help them, as long as the Canberra community is on board as well."
