Canberrans, including a Yarralumla grandmother who staged a solo demonstration outside the German embassy, have added their voices to an outpouring of support for Syrian refugees.

A candlelight vigil was held at the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Barry Drive at 5pm Tuesday.
It followed candlelight vigils in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin, Perth and Hobart on Monday evening.
Hundreds of Canberrans holding tealights and sprigs of wattle stood in silence to show their solidarity with those affected by the crisis.
Keynote speakers included ACT Labor minister Yvette Berry, Dr John Minns of the Canberra Refugee Action Committee and Greens Senator Sarah Hansen-Young.
Hughes resident Peter Trubshaw brought his daughters, aged six and two, to the rally.
He said the community action was a "good start".
"There needs to be more of a groundswell, more mainstream discussion of policies," Mr Trubshaw said.
Melissa McEwan of Ainslie also attended the vigil with her sons Jude, 11, and Zachary, 9.
She said her children were aware of the refugee crisis and were concerned.
"They know what's happened, they listen to the news. There needs to be a more compassionate response from the Australian government and I think we should be able to show our support," she said.
Zachary said Australian should be "more like Germany' when it came to supporting refugees.
"We need to take more refugees and help them, they should be giving them life."
Jude said, "They need to be more accepting and stop telling people to go back to where they're bombing."
Earlier in the day, Lynn Russell, 64, spent Tuesday morning at the embassy with a sign that thanked Germany for its response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Europe.
"One person with a sign is as good as 20," Ms Russell said. "[German Chancellor] Angela Merkel is amazing to do what she's done, and it shows that she's a strong confident leader that doesn't have to terrify the population into voting for her. She's doing what's moral and ethical."
Mrs Merkel announced last month that Germany would grant asylum to all Syrians in the country. They expect to receive 800,000 requests for asylum this year, nearly one per cent of the country's population.
Ms Russell, who supports welcoming tens of thousands of Syrian refugees into Australia, said her sign drew a strong response from Canberra drivers, who beeped, flashed lights and gave her the thumbs up.
"If I was in Germany I would be in those convoys to go pick up Syrian refugees. I'm not there and I can't do that but what else can I do? I can tell Germany, thank you.
"I think this is normal. I think people are compassionate and people do care but they don't know what to do."
At the weekend, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Australia would increase the number of refugees accepted from Syria, but not the country's overall total for the year.
Opposition leader Bill Shorten responded with calls for an extra 10,000 refugees, while Greens leader Richard di Natale said Australia could accept an extra 20,000 refugees from Syria.
Australia currently accepts 13,750 refugees each year.
