Canberra cinematographer Michael O'Rourke has picked up a silver plaque at the Australian Cinematographers Society Awards for short film, Girl + Ghost.

O'Rourke worked with writer/director Nik Wansbrough and producer/composer Sam Dignand to create the short, which tells the story of a ghost infatuated with the girl next door.
"It's a really visually interesting film it's something I haven't really seen before so it was complicated coming up with the way of filming it," he said.
"All the sets and everything are small-scale models and we've got our actors against a green screen so every single shot of the film is four or five different layers of visual elements packed on top of each to give this illusion."
Girl + Ghost was the opening flick at the 2015 Canberra International Film Festival, which finished up this week. It's also been doing the festival rounds for the past 10 months around the world, also picking two awards in the US – a special jury prize at the Bar Harbor Film Festival in Maine and official selection at the Fargo Fantastic Film Festival in North Dakota.
As part of the film's appearance at the Canberra International Film Festival, O'Rourke, Wansbrough and Dignand donated some of the models, props and the storyboard from the film to the National Film and Sound Archives – they're currently on display in the building's foyer.
Girl + Ghost is currently entered into another 12 festivals across Europe, Asia and the US, which are due to screen in the first half of 2016.
And as for the filmmaking trio – they're now turning their sights to feature films. Keep an eye on this space.
