Some families enjoyed the dodgem cars or had their hair blown back by more gravity-defying rides, but the Van Ballegooyen clan of five had their locks chopped off.

Eldest child Matisse, 14, said she wanted a shorter hair cut and thought "why not shave it all off, and do it for a good cause".

Mother Rowena, after initially backing out, got on board and on Saturday morning the two were joined by Matisse's dad, Jason, sister Abby, 8, and brother Eli, 6, for the Shave for a Cure fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation.

"It's gross actually, a bit weird," Matisse said as she held her separated pony-tail in her hands.

The family had raised $2000 in one week, and the previously pony-tailed hair of Mrs Van Ballegooyen and her daughters would go towards wigs for those for whom baldness was not a choice.

Over in the sheep pavilion, Graham Grinter gave his champion border leicester ram a minor clip with some hand shears as it waited to be judged in the supreme long-wool exhibit competition.

It had already been judged the show's best border leicester ram on Friday, and in Saturday's race it was beaten by only one sheep – a border leicester ewe also from the Retallack Stud founded by Mr Grinter as a teenager 53 years ago.

His wife Isabella said the wins, a regular occurrence for the renowned stud located 300 kilometres north-west of Canberra, were a "great thrill".

"You can't take anything for granted," she said.

Shirley Chamberlain and daughter Gayle Jenner enjoyed an inspection of the flowers in a separate pavilion.

Mrs Chamberlain said she could not grow flowers herself due to a pollen allergy. The elderly Palmerston resident had already bagged herself her regular show treat of fudge.

"They didn't have my Bailey's Irish Cream bag, but I got three different types of fudge," she said.
