A mobile speed camera in Canberra has caught more than six times the average number of drivers while camped out at roadworks in the city's south.

The mobile speed camera was at a roadworks zone on Cotter Road, between the Tuggeranong Parkway and Adelaide Avenue for 90 minutes on Monday night.
Director of road safety and transport regulation at the Justice and Community Safety Directorate, Geoff Davidson said the camera captured 78 vehicles speeding, with the highest speed clocked at 98km/h. The speed limit is 60km/h.
"To give you a bit of context, when we do mobile camera enforcement the sessions usually go for between 60 minutes and 90 minutes and would normally result in a dozen to half a dozen infringements being issued. This is significantly higher than what we'd normally see from mobile camera enforcement activity," Mr Davidson said.
Mobile speed cameras have been parked at the roadworks zone 16 times, with 448 of the 14,657 vehicles checked clocked for speeding.
Remarkably Monday night did not set a new record for the number of speeding drivers at this spot.
Eighty-two drivers were nabbed in one 90-minute session at the location on March 27.
"This particular site is being targeted at the moment because it's the location of a long-term road work activity so the construction is not expected to completed until the middle of next year so for long term road works," Mr Davidson said.
"The point that we're really trying to make is this road is nominally an 80km/h arterial, [but] there have been significant changes to the environment at this location which means that the 80km/h speed limit is no longer appropriate for this road.
"With a 60km/h speed limit now applying and that speed limit applies to protect the road workers at the location and protect the road users and the current environment is as such that there's an increased risk of run-off road crashes and head-on crashes with the temporary changes that have been made for the road alignment and for the roadside at that location."
The most drivers ever caught by a mobile speed camera in one session was at the Barton Highway roadworks, with 92 drivers caught on May 13 last year.
