Christina Gao,13, from Radford College in Bruce competed with six million students from 20,000 schools in 159 countries in the "world's largest" online education competition.

Australia did well in the science category, with Western Australia's Jamie Richards and Kevin Susanto also winning gold in year 9 and 2 respectively.

In addition to coming first in the science category, Australia came second in maths and third overall - beaten by Pakistan in first, and Malaysia in second.

In literacy, Australia placed equal eighth.

Games ambassador Adam Spencer said the competition helped kids get excited about learning. "I hope Australia's win in science will see these students continue their love of learning and confirm that learning isn't for nerds – it's for everyone," he said.

Students also raised more than $100,000, which will go towards helping kids get to school, through the UNICEF School in a Box program.

The World Education Games, hosted by 3P Learning, are held every two years. Students compete in the categories of maths, science and literacy

The 2015 Games were held on October 13, 14 and 15.
