Canberra Times Letters to the Editor: Australia well positioned to hold measured talks with North Korea

Updated April 24 2018 - 9:43pm, first published April 24 2017 - 5:48pm

Mark Kenny's article "North Korean threats will leave alliance countries little choice" (canberratimes.com.au, April 24) makes no attempt to look at the situation from a North Korean perspective and exaggerates the North's military capabilities. The North (with good reason) fears an attack by the US, but does itself little good with its indifference to world opinion, unconventional behaviour, and threatening rhetoric intended to scare off potential adversaries. Pyongyang's military aim is clearly to create a demonstrable nuclear device able to reach the US, which Pyongyang believes is the insurance it needs to deter US military action against it.
