Effervescent Lyneham couple Hannah Birks and her husband James Norton were two of the most colourful, and creative.

"This dress was made by my husband," newly-married Hannah said proudly.

"He's very creative. His mum taught him to sew when we visited over Christmas, so he made this for me."

The pair weren't the only ones who ventured to Braddon for a pre-work pick-me-up, with the call of caffeine proving mightier than the warmth of a doona for many who braved the sub-zero temperatures.

Amid the sea of traditional winter wear of black jackets and long boots, Braddon's Adele Banks stood out in her fuchsia coat and burnt orange scarf.

"I knit my own stuff, that's how I survive winter," Adele said.

"This scarf is one of mine. I knit a lot, mainly just hats and scarves. My nan taught me, but YouTube helped as well."

For Kingston resident Josh James, he said his style is more about functionality than fashion.

"I'm just trying to keep warm. Well, trying to look good but I guess the main objective is warmth. I'm wearing two pairs of socks, and I'm going to pull out the thermals soon," he said.

While layering is the stereotypical key to surviving Canberra's icy weather, fashion expert and CIT senior fashion lecturer Steve Wright shared his secret to successfully surviving the weather.

"My top tip for Canberrans would be to embrace the cold. That means getting clothes that suit the cold, and allow those to be fashionable. Canberrans go from a heated house to a heated car to a heated building, and when faced with the environment they fret.

"For me, it's about getting a good quality coat and playing with different textures with scarves and hats."

Mr Wright said Canberrans are in luck this season with the latest trend, sports luxe, mixing professional wear with sporty pieces.

"One thing we already see here in Canberra is mixing sportswear and formal wear.

"That's because we spend half the time in an office and half the time running around the lake," he joked.
