The car swerved to avoid the pair but clipped Mr Wilson and collided with his friend.
Luckily, Mr Wilson, his friend and the driver of the car lived, but it was one of a few incidents Canberra posties face each year.
Australia Post has released data showing ACT postal workers were involved in 24 road injuries and three dog incidents in the past 12 months.
National data shows three posties are injured in Australia every day, with 768 road injuries in the past year, on top of 447 dog incidents and 114 incidents involving reversing cars.
The ACT had the third lowest total number of incidents after Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
At the time of the collision in July, Mr Wilson and his colleague, who has not been named, was just leaving the Tuggeranong distribution centre.
They had just started their delivery run and stopped at the red light at the intersection of Athllon Drive and Anketell Street when Mr Wilson saw a car approach from behind, veering and running the red light.
"I didn't know there was a car behind that car," Mr Wilson said.
The driver of the second car, a mother who was trying to console her baby in the back seat, saw them at the last minute and swerved but ended up clipping Mr Wilson and hitting his workmate.
Mr Wilson was convinced his friend was dead until he started talking.
Mr Wilson's colleague couldn't move his legs and wasn't sure how he'd ended up on the road with his helmet on.
Luckily, Mr Wilson's workmate walked away relatively unharmed; in fact he walked into the office the afternoon of the accident to say hello but Mr Wilson himself was in shock at the time.
"I've got three little daughters, beautiful wife; they reckon I was just silent. I didn't talk. Just sat on the couch, drifting off into space for a few days," Mr Wilson said.
He put his hand up for the psychiatrist offered to Australia Post workers after they'd been in a collision.
"You don't have to but I felt I needed it," Mr Wilson said.
It took a week for Mr Wilson to get back on his motorcycle, his friend came back last week.
"I've had worse accidents but that's the one that scared me the most because it's the only one I didn't see coming," he said.
His worst accident at work was in Curtin when he swerved to avoid a dog, hit a pile of bricks and came off his bike.
He broke his elbow, had a detached retina and was off the bike for six months.
Australia Post has urged Canberrans to always check for cyclists and motorists, beep their horn when reversing from driveways, secure their dogs and put the mobile phone away.
Mr Wilson said drivers normally don't think to look for motorcyclists but reminded Canberrans they deliver the post every day, so you were guaranteed to see them eventually.
"Look out for us," Mr Wilson warned.
