To kick off National Science Week, professionals from fields including science, technology, engineering and mathematics packed into the Kingston warehouse to teach visitors young and old about how science is a part of every day life.

Visitors had the chance to learn about new technologies, renewable energy, protecting endangered species, robotics, the solar system and more.

One of the more novel exhibits was the homemade robots created by Andrew Corson.

Mr Corson had his Dr Who-inspired Dalek's and human-based meccanoid robots which were a hit with both children and adults.

Mr Corson volunteers at Questacon and takes his creations to schools to demonstrate advances in robotics and what they're capable of.

The robots are controlled by apps on a tablet and employ a variety of visual, audio and proximity sensors to move and communicate.

Mr Corson can even make his robots hold a conversation among themselves and conduct presentations to an audience.

"The kids are just in awe," Mr Corson said.

"You can't get the tablet out of their hands."

Thomas Parkinson's son Matthew was one of those children in awe. At the age of three, Matthew is science mad, Mr Parkinson said.

He said his son particularly enjoyed looking at the dinosaur fossils and getting to hold some lizards.

"He wants to have a Mars birthday party, but it'll take six months to get there," Mr Parkinson joked.

He said Science in ACTion was an event he would have happily attended with or without kids, as there was so much to see and learn about.

"It's amazing Canberra has this sort of stuff all the time, and for free," he said. "It's top class."
