Capital almost got sold down the river

Canberra has been green and lush for months and now we've just had these deluges of flooding, refreshing, cabbage-swelling rains. And so it's amusing to recall that during the ''Battle of the sites'' (1899-1908) opponents of Canberra as the federal capital used to call it a shrivelled wilderness.
