One of the most significant collections of jewellery to ever visit Australia has gone on display at the National Gallery of Australia as part of their new blockbuster exhibition.
Cartier: The Exhibition features more than 300 pieces from the French luxury jewellers, from necklaces, brooches and tiaras, to watches, ornaments, drawings and photographs.
A frequent wearer of the brand herself on red carpets, actress Naomi Watts launched the exhibition at the National Gallery on Wednesday.
She wore a Cartier bracelet, earrings and watch for the occasion, but said she'd be "scared to own" most of the collection on display.
"It's a brand that's been going for more than 150 years so it's classic, and strong," said Watts.
"This particular selection of pieces is quite astounding. I've had the opportunity to walk through yesterday and you'll all be dazzled."
The collection includes a number of notable pieces, like the tiara Catherine Middleton wore on her wedding day, borrowed from Her Majesty the Queen, the first time the Queen has given permission for items from the royal collection to be loaned.
Also on display is Grace Kelly's engagement ring and Elizabeth Taylor's ruby and diamond necklace.
Many of the pieces come from The Cartier Collection, based in Geneva, while others have left their country of origin for the first time. The intricate Tutti Frutti Bandeau was bought by Lady Edwina Mountbatten in 1928 to celebrate the birth of her daughter.
"We almost bought it for The Cartier Collection, but as it was considered a national treasure, we were not allowed to keep it and export it from England," said curator of the Cartier Collection Pascale Lepeu.
"It's the first time it has left England. It's the first time we've had it in an exhibition, and I don't know when it's going to happen again."
Ms Lepeu said the collection is the first Cartier exhibition in Australia.
"We're very happy to share because there are few jewellery collections in museums unless they are antiques or very old jewellery," she said.
"Jewels usually stay in the family and they're given from generations, they are kept. So this is why it's important to share. And the Cartier collection is now very well known by museums all around the world."
Cartier: The Exhibition opens at the National Gallery of Australia on March 30 and runs until July 22. Tickets are available online.
