Casino Canberra targets Chinese and Vietnamese speakers in hiring new staff

The casino are encouraging the linguists to apply to become full-time and part-time guest service officers, who typically look after elite and higher-rolling clients.

The casino is also looking for multilingual recruits for its casino dealer school, offering paid training for successful applicants.

"Applicants with multilingual skills are strongly encouraged to apply," the job advertisement reads.

The casino's new owner, Hong Kong billionaire Tony Fung, has revealed grand Las Vegas-style plans for a new casino on the current site which he snapped up for $6 million in December.

His company, Aquis, has promised an "integrated entertainment precinct" that would help revitalise the City South area, including dining and nightlife options as well as gaming.

Australian casinos are increasingly targeting VIP gamblers from China and the expanding Asian middle classes to boost business.

James Packer, who is building a $1-billion casino resort at Barangaroo, has explicitly said "the biggest opportunity" lies in China. But due to a crackdown on gambling by the Chinese government, revenue has been dropping for casinos such as his in Hong Kong.

The new Canberra positions are among a number of jobs on offer at the casino, including table games dealers, cashiers, security officers, and food and beverage attendants.

Aquis said in January that it expects to finish the complex by the end of 2016, with an economic impact study to be released early this year.

"I'd expect the quality of dining and entertainment options on offer to be on a par with some of the best integrated casino developments in Australia and around the world," Aquis managing director Justin Fung said at the time.

Aquis recently appointed a new Canberra-based chief executive for their Australian casino projects, former Sands Macau general manager Geoff Andres.
