The Hall School Museum and Heritage Centre is letting locals take some of that history home with them at its community Garage Sale Trail – Australia's biggest day of garage sales – on Saturday.
More than 20 sellers will set up behind the former Hall Primary School which was closed by the ACT government in 2006, five years short of its centenary.
Event organiser Mardie Troth is expecting a huge variety of sites selling unique trinkets, including plants, books, rural tools, historical items, farming machinery, "designer clothes" and even items from the Hall School Museum itself.
"I've got a couple of families from the village, some from surrounding suburbs like Evatt and Spence, so the idea is to increase our profile but also provide a community service," Ms Troth said.
"One of our sellers has a mother and mother-in-law who are now selling off their houses, so there are two whole houses full of interesting items, including some beautiful crystal.
"They are both in their nineties and they've been collecting for years. You just don't know what will pop up."
Honorary curator at the Hall School Museum Phil Robson said it's the first chance he's had to sell some surplus furniture and items "that don't fit in with the museum's purpose" and hopes money raised on Saturday will help keep the history of the Hall community alive. While the museum has been operating since the 1980s, Hall village was proclaimed in 1882.
Families can make a day of the sale, as neighbouring St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church is set to hold its garden fete with music, stalls, food and games. The museum's ANZAC exhibition 'When Hall answered the call" will also be open on the day.
Locals can get involved on Saturday and set up their own site for a $10 fee.
The Garage Sale Trail – a partner of The Canberra Times – is a not-for-profit community event allowing local communities to hold thousands of garage sales on the same day to help Australia keep neighbourhood waste out of landfill.
