The CSO's 2015 season includes Rimsky-Korsakov's orchestral showpiece Scheherazade, Brahms' dramatic Fourth Symphony, music of the big band era with In The Mood, and an opera gala featuring arias by Puccini, Wagner and Verdi.
Canberra does get the occasional touring show or concert. Next year Verity Hunt-Ballard stars as the dance-hall girl with big dreams in the Helpmann Award-winning Sydney production of Sweet Charity, with songs including Big Spender and if They Could See Me Now.
Coming from even further away is The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra, arriving from the United States for an 80th-birthday tour.
But much of our musical entertainment is home-grown and there's a thriving musical theatre scene in Canberra.
Next year we have the Canberra premiere productions of Mary Poppins from Free-Rain Theatre and High Fidelity from Phoenix, Philo's first production in many years of Evita, and Pee Wee Productions' Jesus Christ Superstar - the Arena Spectacular at the AIS.
On the CD front, there's been a boom in good-value big boxes for lovers of classical music including some recent releases from DG and Sony featuring music composed and/or conducted by Leonard Bernstein.
