A man who killed a Canberra university student while he was driving a stolen car more than a decade ago has been denied bail as he awaits trial accused of breaking a guard's back and cracking his skull in a prison bashing.

The man, 27, who cannot be named, will remain behind bars after an ACT Supreme Court judge found he posed an "unacceptable risk" to the community and should not be released to attend a drug rehabilitation program.
He pleaded not guilty to threat to kill, recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm, strangulation, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm over the alleged attack at the Alexander Maconochie Centre in January.
The man was 15 when he struck and killed Clea Rose in a stolen car during a police pursuit in 2005.
His sentence is due to expire in September next year, however, the non-parole period ended in July.
The man was recently recommended for parole on the condition he go into residential rehabilitation upon release.
He launched a fresh bid for bail in court on Wednesday after withdrawing an application earlier this month.
Prosecutors opposed his release due to risks he would reoffend or abscond to avoid trial over his alleged "extreme outbreak of violence".
Court documents said the accused woke his cellmate with a razor blade to his throat on January 15.
It's alleged he assaulted and threatened to kill the cellmate before Corrections officers tried to restrain the man, but he broke free and punched and attempted to choke the other prisoner with a handcuff chain.
He then allegedly attempted to fight off five guards, punching one in the face before swinging him face first into a desk.
The guard suffered fractures to his nose, skull and vertebrae in his neck and upper back.
He's also accused of punching a second guard in the face.
Prosecutor Anthony Williamson said the defendant was "an extremely dangerous criminal who is entirely self-centred" and his criminal offending had been "prolific and consistent".
But the man's legal aid lawyer, Richard Davies, said a bed was available at a 10-month residential rehabilitation centre in Canberra and the man should be given the opportunity to rehabilitate.
Mr Williamson pointed to remarks from Justice John Burns when he had sentenced the man in 2012 and said he showed "a disturbing lack of concern" for others' wellbeing and was "a very real and continuing danger to the community".
The judge noted Ms Rose's death "did not engender in you any commitment to lasting change in your life".
"If killing a human being in 2005 through similar reckless behaviour did not produce a commitment to lasting change I doubt anything will."
Mr Williamson said the judge's comments had been "entirely vindicated" as the man had gone on to commit further offences and breach court orders.
He pointed to his "poor behaviour in custody" and said he was "utterly incapable of behaving himself in the AMC".
Mr Davies questioned the relevance of the fatal crash to the bail application.
"It was 12 years ago. Your Honour will read about it in the press tomorrow and it's dragged up every time this man's in court."
The defendant interrupted Justice David Mossop as he handed down his decision to say there was "a lot of stuff" that hadn't been put before him.
He said he had "no history of violence" and he would argue at trial he had been mentally impaired at the time of the alleged attack.
"I was clean for 10 months, I had a lapse of pot," he said. "You can check, I've got five clean urines."
Justice Mossop said efforts towards rehabilitation should be encouraged but it was not appropriate to grant the man bail.
