Clear, sunny skies bring Canberrans out into the cold

Two beautiful, crisp days saw many flock to Lake Burley Griffin and the city, where the World Curry Festival and Skate in the City were drawcards.

The fine weather is expected to stick around until Wednesday, when rain and possible showers are forecast for four days straight.

The clear days also mean colder nights and heavier frosts, which are predicted to hit on Monday and Tuesday.

Simon Rowell, Ophelia Rubinich and their son Orson were among Canberrans who made the most of Sunday's clear skies and headed for Lake Burley Griffin.

The couple said the sunshine was a nice change after the Hackett family woke to frozen water in their bird bath.

"We're just trying to escape the cold," Mr Rowell said.

"So we're burning off some energy for the boy and the dog."

The family had rugged up but warmer temperatures meant they were considering an ice cream after lunch.

"I think Canberra people are good, you just get up and go no matter what the weather's like.

"It's nice not to have wind and cloudy, grey skies."

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben McBurney said July was so far tracking one degree below the long-term minimum average.

"It's been a fairly cold month," he said.

"We've had a quite cold July and it's certainly an anomaly for the last decade."

He said the cold days meant the temperatures would remain low at night and in the mornings.

"This morning [Sunday] it got down to minus five at the airport and tomorrow we're probably expecting fairly similar conditions," he said.

"We should see some of those cold nights continue, despite the really nice days, reaching 13 and 14 in the daytime."

Monday is forecast to reach a maximum of 13 degrees, and a minimum of minus four, while Tuesday will be slightly warmer at 14 degrees.

Five to 10mm of rain is expected on Wednesday, but will ease to possible showers on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
