The region is in for a busy weekend with a drop in temperature, rain and the return to daylight saving. After reaching a top of 27 degrees yesterday, 10-25 millimetres of rain is expected today with a top of 17 degrees and tomorrow should be sunny, reaching 18 degrees.

Daylight saving will come into effect at 2am tomorrow for the ACT, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Everyone should put their clocks forward an hour.

The change in the daily routine might be fine for some, but Greg Murray, the head of Psychological Sciences and Statistics at Swinburne University of Technology, says the adjustment may cause short-term sleep and mood problems, especially for adolescents and night owls.

''Initially there is an acute sleep deprivation of one hour,'' he said.

''On top of the chronic sleep deprivation that many people suffer, this additional loss of sleep appears to cause decreased alertness, concentration and mental performance.''

Dr Murray suggests planning to go to bed earlier, leaving the house early for work or school, exposure to light early in the day and socialisation as ways to mitigate daylight saving-related tiredness.

Jerrabomberra residents Shelley and Nick Morris, parents of young children Lucy and William, said a few days after the switch seemed to be when the tiredness hit for the kids.

''We actually like daylight saving,'' Mr Morris said. ''The problem at the moment is the sun coming up - so they're getting up early - so you have an issue either way, don't you.''

ACT Fire & Rescue is also reminding Canberrans to check their smoke alarms when changing clocks this weekend.

''When people are asleep, they can't smell smoke. Having a loud and functioning smoke alarm placed at various points around the home can alert residents when required,'' chief officer Paul Swain said.

Daylight saving ends at 3am eastern daylight saving time on the first Sunday in April next year.
