The Cranleigh School consulted Ngunnawal elders when designing its Kamberri sensory space, officially launched this week.

Built on an outdoor deck, the space includes water features, sand and bubbles, all of which are intended to help children with limited movement or sensory processing issues learn and play in a safe, fresh air environment.

The area includes paintings by Clare Thackway of hot air balloons and bogong moths, while a tree growing through the deck and planned climbing boulders include a connection to the land and the region's pre-colonial history.

Principal Sue Roche said the school decided to make the deck a sensory space to provide an alternative, outdoor environment in which the children would be excited to learn.

"Multi-sensory activities are very important for all our kids, particularly children with autism," she said.

"When you've got a motivational environment they want to be in, you get a lot of natural language and natural learning. Because it's a flat, even space, it allows us to have our most immobile children out in the fresh air without having hazards like a sloping playground."

The space also caters for creativity, with a drawing corner, indigenous story reading time and "Aunty Wendy's mob music" making up other parts of the facility.

Ms Roche said the project offered the school an opportunity to partner with and acknowledge the Ngunnawal people.

"We modified a bunch of activities that work for the kids out there to platform and celebrate indigenous culture," she said.

"We have a significant number of indigenous students and we have a large number of students from non-English speaking backgrounds."

Kasie Micallef, whose daughter Lovina attends the school, said the sensory space was a great idea.

"[Lovina's] absolutely loving it," she said.

"There are so many activities that if somebody doesn't like one thing, there's plenty more for them to do. It's great they have extra space to play."
