If all political careers are destined to end in disappointment, as is sometimes said, then Simon Crean might qualify as exhibit A for the team arguing in the affirmative. With his long political pedigree, his high-flying career in the union movement and his consensus-driven style, Mr Crean was touted as a future prime minister even before he entered Parliament in 1990.
