Cronulla riots remind of the fragility of rule of law, even in civilised Australia

This week will mark the 10th anniversary of a shameful event in our nation's history: the Cronulla riots. The assaults that took place on December 11, 2005 – and the wave of subsequent "revenge" attacks – were by no means the most violent in Australia's past. Indeed, given the number of people involved (about 5000 by most estimates) and the rabid ferocity of the mob, it is astonishing that no one was killed or critically injured.
