Dave 'Spurs' Goodall decorates front lawn with 229 flags for Australia Day

The Cook man, who moved to Australia from Britain when he was eight, has decked his front yard with bunting made up of 229 Australian flags, one to represent each year since colonisation.

He has invited friends and family along to his Australia Day party on Thursday, which also features the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, as well as the flags of the AFP and RM Williams.

Larger flags lined the entrance to his driveway and welcomed visitors into his house.

Plywood banners listed famous and not-so-famous Australian identities and major moments in Australia's history, as well as a list of Australia's war dead.

Mr Goodall's blue heeler, named RM after RM Williams, will also mix with the crowd on the day.

Mr Goodall said he had not been back to Britain since he first emigrated, and wanted more people to bring out decorations for the public holiday. "This country has to offer about two-thirds of what the rest of the world has," he said.

"We have every type of geographical recreation around the country, from the tropics to the snow and the beaches.

"The Americans beat us by a long way with their patriotism."

This is the second time Mr Goodall has decorated his house for Australia Day.

He said that although he was a devout Christian, he didn't spend time lighting up his house at Christmas, preferring instead to save the festivities for the last week of January.

Ngunnawal elder Wally Bell was to deliver the Welcome to Country on the day at the house, which Mr Goodall said was aimed to recognise the past and acknowledge the need for the country to come together.

"Sit down and have a XXXX or another beer around the house on Australia Day, but also remember why we're celebrating on this day," he said.

"We're celebrating our country and the day is about coming together as one people."
