They could stink up a kitchen better than boiling old tea towels in a soup pot to get rid of six months' mutton fat and grubby fingers. You would open the back door and the scent of turnip would billow out, whether it was turnip in a stew or boiling turnips, destined to be mashed into a watery sludge, even if you added butter and cream – stringy and just plain yuck.
