Ninety-three per cent of psychostimulant users reported the drug was "easy" or "very easy" to find in the ACT, recent Ecstasy and Related Drugs Reporting System figures show.

For Canberra drug users, ecstasy was the substance of choice for 36 per cent of those surveyed, greater than cannabis (29 per cent) and alcohol (13 per cent).

However ACT drug users took ecstasy less frequently compared to those elsewhere in Australia, except NSW.

Salvation Army operations manager for recovery services Gerard Byrne said easy supply affected demand levels for the drug.

"It's easier to get and that's driving the market," he said.

Ecstasy use had fallen nationally, and in the ACT, Mr Byrne said.

While alcohol addiction was the reason most people sought treatment, ecstasy users generally did not approach drug services for assistance, he said.

Ice was the next most common substance drug users sought help about.

The ACT recorded the country's lowest rate of ice use, reaching five per cent of drug users, below the 19 per cent national average and South Australia's figure of 33 per cent.

Ice use dropped in the ACT from seven per cent in 2015, and a recent peak of 26 per cent in 2012, despite holding steady nationally.

The figures come as the federal government implements a $298 million national strategy targeting ice use, including $241.5 million for Primary Health Networks.

Cannabis use has increased among Canberra drug users to 85 per cent, compared to 74 per cent in 2014.
