More than 1200 seats are being ripped out of the Canberra Theatre this week - leaving behind an eerie scene that looks scarily like the set of American horror series The Walking Dead.

With hundreds of arm rests, seats and back rests sitting in piles, and metal brackets all askew, the theatre has taken on an eerie, empty ambience - with 51 years worth of musicals, rock acts and other performances lingering in the shadows.
It's not unlike an abandoned building from the television series The Walking Dead, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic Atlanta, Georgia, and whose hallmarks include deserted cities and venues.
A team of 10 technical staff is working on the seat removal project, with new seats and carpet set to be installed and ready to go for the theatre's first show of 2017 - Music at Midday on 14 February.
The new seats are part of a $4 million, three-year upgrade to Canberra Theatre Centre that began last year.
Major items in the renovation also include new carpet for The Playhouse, and refurbished dressing rooms, backstage and Stage Door areas for the Canberra Theatre.
