The lights will be turned from the steps of the National Library of Australia, which also this year celebrates 50 years since its opening in 1968.
The 16-night festival will be kicked off by a member of the public - chosen via a competition run by ActewAGL - switching on the lights.
The time for the switch on and fireworks is 8pm.
The public is invited to gather from 6.30pm when the National Library will celebrate its birthday in '60s style with music of the era, a kids' disco and art and craft stations.
Also being lit up will be the National Gallery of Australia, National Portrait Gallery, Old Parliament House, Questacon and Parliament House.
