The placid facade of Aldi's Gungahlin store masked pandemonium more akin to the Boxing Day sales than the tedium of a supermarket shop as the Australian fashion designer's limited edition line of girls' clothing went live.

This is the first time Aldi has teamed up with a high-profile designer in Australia and Canberrans went crazy for the discount supermarket's "Special Buys" promotion.

Shoppers squished shoulder to shoulder to dig through piles of swimsuits, summer dresses and hats designed for babies up to teenagers.

Casey residents Julie Triggs and her four-year-old daughter Mia came looking for swimmers but ending up walking away with a beautiful summer dress.

"It was chaos, I had to put Mia to the side, I didn't want her to be a part of it," Ms Triggs said.

Nicholls mum Jenny Rogers predicted it would be chaos but braved the surge to bag a bargain.

"I knew it was going to be a fiasco with [Collette's] name considering she retired and came back," she said.

"I think it's great for a few select pieces. It's got lots of gorgeous things for little girls. Every little girl in Gungahlin will be wearing it. It's a pity there's nothing for boys."

Price was a big factor, customers said - the Young Hearts collection starts at $11.99 and tops out at $29.99.

"I would pay up to $50, $60 for this at Myer or David Jones. It's just a little bit different for kids clothes. It's a bit elegant," Watson resident Amy Faden said.

"It's a great price, it's a great quality product," Lisa Merry of Amaroo added.

"I'm late for work but it's totally worth it."
