Expect a soggy Sunday in Canberra

The Bureau of Meteorology's Neal Fraser said the ACT forecast was nothing close to the dangerous weather systems that wreaked havoc on the NSW coast on Saturday.

"The really heavy rain should be down on the coast and escarpment," he said. "There will still be decent rain in Canberra on Sunday, between 20-60 millimetres which is substantial but nothing that's going to lead to any flash flooding we don't think."

As of 9am Sunday, the ACT SES had received 23 calls for help due to the wet weather to 23 since Saturday.

"The Woden, Belconnen and Tuggeranong volunteer units have been stood up to respond to jobs across Canberra," the ACT Emergency Services Agency said in a statement.

"The majority of calls have been for leaking roofs and fallen trees.

"The public is reminded to stay well clear of storm drains as they can fill up quickly. Call 132 500 for storm or flood assistance."

Volunteer teams, Rivers and Tuggeranong, were supported by ACT Fire and Rescue in responding to the calls.

Teams attended an overflowing drain in Curtin, but an ESA spokeswoman said no major damage was reported.

Footballers had a slippery Saturday but Canberra will experience moderate easterly winds between 15 to 25 km/h and the heaviest rain in the early hours of Sunday.

Angle Crossing and Sunshine Crossing were closed late on Saturday due to wet weather and the ACT government warned drivers not to cross flooded low-level crossings.

Severe weather warnings remain in place for coastal NSW and Mr Fraser said it was not a weekend for Canberrans to hit the coast.

"Near the coast they will be close to the low," he said. "The sea is going to be very dangerous, with extreme winds."

On Saturday Moruya Heads recorded more than 49mm of rainfall and heavier downpours are forecast throughout Sunday.

"It could be quite a dangerous system and the southern half of the coast will cop it more on Sunday," he said. "There is no real let up for the south coast once it gets going."
