Since returning to Australia after seven years living in the UK, Mr Walton and his wife Liz have focused on getting restarted while raising their three-year-old daughter.

Mr Walton saw the federal budget as a pitch to low and middle-income voters, rather than the top end of town, and welcomed its promise to increase the instant asset write-off threshold from $25,000 to $30,000. A plan to cut the 32.5 per cent income tax rate to 30 per cent in 2024 would also help his family, he said.

"Having a surplus and not increasing taxes, it's a good budget as far as budgets go."

The Coalition's plan to ramp up roads and rail spending wouldn't directly benefit Mr Walton, who works in residential construction. However it would help his part of the building industry indirectly nonetheless, he said.

While Mr Walton has long worked as a builder, he is planning for the next phase.

"My body is still good but it won't be forever, so I'm looking to get into project management," he said.

He also aims to upsize his family's home, and has an eye on the Yass Valley to buy an investment property soon and grow their wealth.

Mrs Walton has a job as a massage therapist that brings the family "now money", and is also building her own business as a fertility coach.

Her goals are simply to grow her business and get ahead enough financially to have the option of a family holiday.

Mr Walton was pleased the government planned to spend while reaching a surplus.

"That was the problem with Mr Howard, is he held onto it for too long. These guys actually are spending the surplus but not putting us back into the negative," Mr Walton said.

"It's a very good budget for an upcoming election, that's for sure."
