So in her 15 minutes the other day she introduced me to Kesha's new song Woman.

We're long-time fans of Kesha. The kids and I bopped along to We R Who We R and Tik Tok in the early days. When Crazy Kids came out in 2012 we actually broke it down into parts, with my son coping very well, even as a nine-year-old, with the Will. I. Am. parts.

And then Kesha went quiet. Since 2013 she's been embroiled in a legal stoush with her former producer, Dr Luke, accusing him of physical and emotional abuse. And now she's back. Feistier than ever before. Her first single Praying is supposedly about Dr Luke:

Well, you almost had me fooled

Told me that I was nothing without you

Oh, but after everything you've done

I can thank you for how strong I have become

And now we're loving the new Kesha too.

I'll put this bit in here, now, to get it out of the way. This column, and the following video clip, has one of those explicit lyrics stickers on it. (Here's a thing, can you ever remember such a sticker being on a vinyl record? Food for thought.)

So Kesha's Woman is an ode to all feisty women everywhere. We don't need men to buy our drinks, or call us honey. Because we run our own shit, thanks very much. We're making our own money, having fun with our girlfriends, we don't need men to hold us "too" tight.

Because we're motherf**king women. (Apologies on this early Sunday morning. But we are.)

I was listening to the song in the car, very loud, after I had dropped the kids off at school. I loved it. A strong affirming soundtrack which all young women should listen to. (Parents: whilst ignoring the sweary bits.)

I don't like to use the word feminism too much. I am one by definition. But I've just made my path without thinking much about gender (and there's probably a whole column in that thought too).

But what songs were on the soundtrack to my feisty teenage years? When Helen Reddy's seminal I Am Woman came out in 1972 I was only six. I remember the song well. Even now it still gets a run, or is referred to. We've all paid the price, gained wisdom out of pain. We're strong and invincible. But still I was only six.

Growing up in the 1980s artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lennox, Madonna, and Pat Benatar all showed me that I didn't have to conform to any idea of normal.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Who's That Girl, Like a Virgin, Love is a Battlefield were all on high rotation.

So too was the Flashdance soundtrack. Irene Cara's soundtrack and Jennifer Beals made me believe I could work at the steelworks, dance like a crazy woman, and get away with wearing leg warmers.

I had some other favourites, too, which were probably a little older. Dolly Parton's Joelene, Lesley Gore's You Don't Own Me and Cher's Gypsys Tramps and Thieves. (Add here, pretty much anything from Cher to present day.)

I do worry, when I have my mother pants on, whether our daughters are receiving the same message we were getting back in our day. There seems to be a lot of gyrating, a lot of sweary bits, a lot of sex.

But the more I listen to this song, the more I think it's great that our daughters are being taught that it's OK to ask for what you want, to not be ashamed of being sexual beings, that women can be in control, and the gals in this clip certainly are that.

So have a listen to Kesha's Woman. Think about what the young woman, and she's only 30, has been through in the past couple of years, and be hopeful that she's emerged in such a powerful place.

We can only hope that our own daughters reach that same powerful place, albeit without the pain Kesha's been through. And if they shake their booty a bit along the way, all the power to them. After all, Cyndi knew it way back then, we do just wanna have fun.
