Fire fighters were called to the Canberra Hospital after reports of smoke billowing from the hospital's diagnostic area.

But upon investigation of the source of the smoke, an ACT Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the smoke was caused by a mechanical failure in an air conditioning system and contractors were then called to deal "with the issue".

Fire crews were earlier alerted to the incident just after 3pm and went to the scene with three fire pumpers, breathing apparatus, a Bronto aerial firefighting appliance and a hazardous materials team.
