Firefighters battle two kitchen fires in south Canberra on Sunday

The first fire, in a three-storey apartment on State Circle in Deakin, was called in just after 4.20pm.

At 4.40pm firefighters were called to the second fire, at an apartment complex on Cunningham Street in Griffith.

Both fires involved unattended cooking, the Emergency Services Agency said.

Residents of both buildings were evacuated as a precaution due to smoke.

ACT Fire and Rescue recently reminded Canberrans to "don't stop looking while you're cooking" as part of its winter fire safety campaign.
