Opening in the Canberra Centre, downstairs near Fitness First (that in itself is an indication of the kind of food you’ll get), Nosh’s focus is on delicious, wholesome food that nourishes without compromising flavour.
“Nosh is pretty simple,” says co-owner Chloe Vuong.
“It’s about real food, made well.
“One of the misconceptions about healthy food is it's not as tasty. For us it’s about harnessing the natural ingredients and flavours and enhancing that in a natural way so you can taste the freshness.”
There’s an excellent range of poke bowls, sashimi, salmon, chicken, beef, tempeh, even duck. Fill up your bowl with a range of fresh ingredients, avocado, a 63-degree egg, vegetables, rice, quinoa, kale, and goji berries. The combinations are endless. And you can order off the menu or make up your own bowl.
There are also nori tacos, little familiar shells encasing a range of fillings from salmon to tofu to prawns. These are encased in quirky little cardboard carriers which Vuong designed herself. A nice touch.
After two years in Melbourne, the Nosh team decided to branch out and chose Canberra as the first away venue.
“We visited Canberra and thought, wow, the food scene here is pretty amazing,” says Vuong.
“We realised people do appreciate quality here and we love the fact it's a smaller community.
“It’s been great getting to know our customers as regulars, people are so lovely here and they're just as passionate about the food as we are.”
It seems we have different tastes too. While in Melbourne the big sellers are the salmon and sashimi options, in Canberra we’re leaning towards the Wagyu-San and Peek-ing Duck versions.
The kombucha on tap is also popular in Canberra, in pina colada, blueberry and lime, or apple and pomegranate flavours
Nosh is open from 11am, seven days a week. It closes at 9pm Monday to Thursday, 10pm on a Friday night and 8pm on the weekends.
Vuong said it was important to be able to offer up healthy options for dining later in the evening.
“That's something we thought about when we worked in corporate, where to get a healthy meal later in the evening,” she says.
“We were busy and if you’re working late, it’s hard to get a decent, healthy meal after 8pm.”
She said they’ve noticed an influx of people at certain times during the evening, perhaps catching the outgoing movie crowd. At lunch there are always queues.
“We’re getting a lot of different people, corporate, students, shoppers. We’re loving Canberra.”
