But I was completely unprepared when I set my sights on a different pet.

Coming from Queensland where they are illegal, I'd never even thought about getting a rabbit. But I went to a friend's party and there they were – two little balls of fluff, hopping around an apartment, completely toilet trained. I was enamoured.

Finding an actual rabbit proved quite simple – I went out to see a breeder, and the second I lay my eyes on him, I "knew".

But the name didn't come to me as quickly.

"Thumper" was an early favourite, but I felt a rabbit needed a human name – potentially to justify to those back in Queensland that my rabbit was a legitimate pet, not a pest.

Benedict Carrotpatch, Aflie, Albert Von Bunnyface, Rupert and Basil all made it on to a list of potential names, but then all ended up on the chopping block.

Everyone just kept telling me the name would come to me once I got him home, and that I'd know what it was when I looked at him. But that vein of thought was only going to end in him being named "Smooshy Face" – and nobody wanted that.

And then it did come to me, with inspiration from my childhood bear.

I was given "Teddy" by my grandparents not long after I was born, and he went on to become one of the most well-travelled bears in history with me taking him everywhere I went.

He also came to live with me when I studied in Glasgow when I was 20, but was lost in a tragic incident while running for a train in Nottingham.

So Teddy it is. I can't say he quite answers to the name yet, but he is only nine weeks old. He's still determining the difference between his litter tray and food bowl, so I'll try and cut him some slack for now.
