The RSPCA says its inspectors were first warned of the dogs' condition in October last year, and went to the home to find a brown Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a tan and white Bullmastiff cross in poor health.

Both were severely underweight and were found in messy, squalid conditions, without access to water.

The ribs of the Staffordshire were visible, while the other dog's ribs and spine could also be seen, and the tip of its tail was split and bleeding.

The dogs were seized, and a few days later the Staffordshire began to vomit blood and "metallic particles", the RSPCA say.

Six fish hooks were found in the animal's system, the organisation said.

It took two operations to remove all of the metallic pieces ingested by the animal.

The owner, a 26-year-old woman, was sentenced for animal cruelty offences last week.

The ACT Magistrates Court sentenced her to a 12-month good behaviour order, fined her, and banned her from owning any animal for a decade.

The RSPCA, in a statement issued on Monday, said it was satisfied with the outcome.

Senior inspector Catherine Croatto said the ban sent a strong message to the community that animal cruelty and neglect would be taken seriously.

"RSPCA are not always successful in obtaining these bans," she said.

"However, the severity of this case certainly warranted it."
