AMERICAN MASTERS
Some mornings, the speckles of hot sauce on my avocado toast can be compared to an abstract expressionist painting. But it's exhibitions like the National Gallery's American Masters which remind me that I'm way off, and creating art is hard. The new exhibition will feature American artists from the 1940s to the 1980s, covering styles colour field, pop, neo-dada, abstract expressionism and photo-realism, so basically my Instagram grid right now. National Gallery of Australia. August 24 – November 11, 2018. 10am–5pm daily. Free entry. nga.gov.au
NFSA TALKS
If you haven't got your butt to the new exhibition at the National Film and Sound Archive, this Friday might be your time. This week, curator Jennifer Coombes discusses putting together the exhibition and acquiring the Naomi Watts costume from the film Ned Kelly. National Film and Sound Archive. Friday 1pm. Free, bookings essential. nfsa.gov.au

FARM GATE
Shut the gate! Canberra's got another market on this weekend. If vintage fashion isn't your scene, because you can't exactly eat a retro cardy or gnaw upon a funky 70s boot, Pialligo Estate's Farm Gate Markets might be your go-to. This Sunday, the Pialligo paddock will showcase local vendors brimming with gourmet food, wine and spirits. There will also be live music throughout the day. Bring the kids. Pialligo Estate. Sunday 10am-2pm. Free entry. thepialligoestate.com.au
LLAMAS & ALPACAS
My experiences with llamas and alpacas have been limited to a few missed selfies at the Canberra Show and YouTube videos of them heartily spitting on folk. Yet there's something about seeing these sassy beasts on a misty Canberra morning that makes me want to believe. Alpacas and Llamas in the Mist is an opportunity to meet more than 200 alpacas and llamas as they stroll the peaceful paddocks of Sutton. 2771 Sutton Road, Sutton. Sunday 8.30-10am. $35-40. www.alpacamagic.com.au
