Five spots for spring drinks around Canberra

1. OLD PARLIAMENT HOUSE

You know spring is here when Friday drinks start up again at Old Parliament House. Think deckchairs, lawn games, drinks and food, all in the courtyard of the former home of democracy. The event is somewhat of a Canberra institution and keeps coming back each year, bigger and better. This time they've got a different theme each night, with food, drinks and entertainment to match; you can find out the themes on their Facebook page. The event runs on Friday nights until December 16, and then kicks off again from February 3 to April 7 next year. Entry is free.

2. NATIONAL MUSEUM

Also reopening is the Museum Bar at the National Museum. Every Sunday from October 9, they're hosting Sundaze with live music, drinks on the deck overlooking the lake, and Indian eats from food truck The Roasted Bites. Check out their Facebook for who's performing each week. They've also extended their Sunday hours for the exhibition A History of the World in 100 Objects, so you can check it out while you're there. 3-7pm on Sundays. Entry is free.

3. AVIARY ROOFTOP BAR

It's hard to find a better view of Lake Burley Griffin than from the Aviary Rooftop Bar at Westside Acton Park. They've kicked off their "Fridays from Five" with DJs, drink specials and street food so you can start the weekend well. Free entry.

4. MINT GARDEN BAR

Nestled outside Sage Restaurant in Braddon, Mint Garden Bar is reopening for the season on Friday, October 14. The hidden gem has chilled out drinks and occasional live music, in a courtyard garden at the heritage-listed Gorman House. Free entry.

5. THE POT BELLY

Belconnen's Pot Belly Bar is opening on Sundays again from November 6. They have a barbecue so you can bring your own meat and have a cook-up while you enjoy a beer. Plus they're launching their season of car park cricket. 3pm-late. Free entry.
