A local family snapped up the 1960-square-metre property at 16 Hunter Street in Yarralumla on Tuesday night.

The Wallabies skipper and former ACT Brumbies captain's decision to join the Queensland Reds sparked the sale of his family home, which was due to go under the hammer on Saturday.

Selling agent Rowan Glanville of Peter Blackshaw Real Estate Woden and Weston Creek said the size of the mega block and its location in an "exclusive pocket" of the inner south had caught the attention of a number of prospective buyers.

He said there had also been interest in the four-bedroom, two-bathroom house, as well as the potential to build a new residence on the large site.

"It was certainly appealing, the fact that an almost-2000-square-metre land holding in the Canberra region has become more of a rarity," he said.

The property is almost double the size of the traditional quarter-acre block that characterises many of Canberra's established suburbs.

Mr Glanville said the block was among only a dozen or so above the 1500-square-metre mark in the area.

Moore snapped up the Yarralumla property in April, 2014 for $1.65 million, according to Domain Group sales data.

He has previously described the move to his home state of Queensland as bittersweet, after calling the ACT home for more than seven years during his Brumbies career.

"We're very sad to leave Canberra," Moore said.

"The decision to move up to Queensland happened very quickly. Now that it's happened we're excited by the challenge, particularly for me with my career, [but] Canberra's been such a big part of my life.

"It's where both our kids were born, it's the only place in Australia where Courtney, my wife, has lived, so for her it's very much home in terms of Australia."

Mr Glanville said about 40 groups had inspected the house since it hit the market on October 5.

Moore's profile had sparked extra interest in the property - and not just in the form of house inspections.

Mr Glanville said the original sign board was stolen from the front of the block during the marketing campaign.

"I don't know if it was a rugby fan who thought they'd get the ultimate memorabilia or someone who just loves property," Mr Glanville quipped.
