In 1914 our region teemed with rabbits, some of them (see our picture) cheekily using rabbit fences as tennis nets. One hundred years ago this week the Queanbeyan Age used some of the space usually used to report the monstrous behaviour of German soldiers in Belgium to report some monstrousness close to home.

"MONSTROUS PROPOSAL. GATE ACROSS FEDERAL CAPITAL ROAD.
"The Mayor of Yass (Alderman J. Browning) says he is strongly opposed to the action of the Queanbeyan Pastures Protection Board in their intention to erect a rabbit proof gate across the main road between Yass and the Federal Capital.
"It really is a very monstrous proposal. If the Queanbeyan Board desire to have the rabbits destroyed on the reserves, let them insist upon them being poisoned. To place a gate across the road to the Federal Capital would be a serious public inconvenience and a danger as well. I will bring the matter before the Municipal Council at the next meeting and propose a resolution protesting against the action of the Queanbeyan Pastures Protection Board. We will protest to the Minister for Agriculture. It is not the proper thing to place an obstacle across an important public road like that. The act becomes infinitely worse when the road is the leading public thoroughfare to the Federal City.
