The battery of a commercial scrubbing machine overheated, causing a hydrogen sulfate leak in the centre in Fyshwick, an ACT Emergency Services spokesperson said.
Crews were alerted to the leak about 6am by an automatic alarm.
Two pumpers, the hazardous materials unit, the breathing apparatus van and a commander attended.
Firefighters were expected to remain on scene until about 8am to ventilate the area.
The centre usually opens for shopping at 10am.
