Geoff Page's Jazz in Concert 2018 season begins on Wednesday at the ANU Pop-Up Village with a performance by former Canberran Alex Raupach and his eponymous Sydney quartet.
Raupach, 28, studied trumpet at the ANU School of Music with Miroslav Bukovsky (whose band Wanderlust is celebrating its 25th anniversary and will be playing on February 7). Although Raupach been based in Melbourne for the past four years, the other quartet players are from Sydney: Thomas Botting on double bass, Alex Hirlian on drums and Steve Barry on piano. This particular quartet has been going since last year.
"It's a great musical combination - I was up playing with Steve before I moved to Melbourne,.. [the two of us have been playing together] for four or five years now," Raupach says.
"We play my compositions and also what I consider to be the great songs of the American Songbook tradition."
There is, he says, "a uniting thread of harmonic sophistication that brings the two together".
Page says Raupach is an example of the jazz talent produced in Canberra, much of which he's tried to showcase in the season as well as musicians from Sydney and Melbourne.
"It's about half local and half from out of town which is a deliberate strategy - I want people to know what's happening out of town."
