Regarded as the noted colonial architect Edmund Blacket's crowning achievement, St Saviour's is showing the effects of serious rising damp and rainwater damage that has built up over the decades. In places inside the cathedral, the honey-coloured local sandstone has dissolved as a result of sub-surface groundwater flows.
To raise funds to restore the magnificent Victorian Decorated Gothic cathedral, a St Saviour's Cathedral Heritage Conservation Appeal will be launched on Saturday.
The Anglican Bishop of Canberra-Goulburn, the Right Reverend Stuart Robinson, will open the appeal at an afternoon function in the cathedral and nearby hall and guests from throughout the diocese and other parts of Australia will be able to gauge the extent of the damage to the building and how the restoration program will restore the fabric and interior.
Visitors will be shown a detailed conservation management plan and works timetable prepared by international heritage architect Michael Fox, who has been engaged to supervise the project.
Mr Fox previously supervised the erection of the spires at St Mary's Catholic Cathedral in central Sydney, and recent amelioration of rising damp damage to Kincoppal Convent's chapel in Rose Bay.
