Or it is for those who don't have a 'Christmas shelf' where gifts can gather through the year, not counting the books which must be pre-read before given (it is poor etiquette in our family to give a book you haven't read, unless it involves cricket) or the pots of cuttings that have been growing to gift size since winter.
